Placement
Levels are always based on the best fit for the individual student. Final placement lies in the hands of the Director and the instructor. The following is a simplified
version of the definitions for each level. An individual assessment by private appointment will allow you to receive an elaborate breakdown of your dancer’s abilities.
Level I/II is best suited for students who are new to the style being taught, or are interested in perfecting elements previously learned. Ballet III, Lyrical III, and Jazz III
students have at least three school-years’ experience with the given style. They also possess a keen sense of proper foot/body/arm placement, understand performance-
quality projection, and can easily perform double pirouettes, all splits, various grande jetes, and proper grande battements. Level IV/V students have at least five school-
years’ experience with the given style, have mastered the skills of a III student, can perform triple and quadruple pirouettes, can execute eight consecutive turns in
second, and are acutely familiar with performance-quality projection. Tap III students have at least three school-years’ experience and can easily execute the following
with clean sounds: single and double time steps, pull backs on the toes, consecutive alternating shuffles, drawbacks, paddle rolls (or paradiddles), maxi fords, buffaloes,
and running flaps. Tap IV/V students have at least five school-years’ experience and can execute the prior steps in their most complicated forms (additional flaps,
brushes, shuffles). They are able to execute wings, various tap turns, and are keenly familiar with tap vocabulary. New students who are not privately assessed are
initially placed in a lower level so they may be assessed in a comfortable atmosphere, and then moved up.
